A striking design with a colorway to match, the Codex Dining Table is a suitable option for more compact dining spaces, thanks to its rounded design. A pedestal-styled base that tapers slightly, and even more so near its top, is crafted in a matte black finish that is sure to command attention, especially when combined with its sleek white Volakos ceramic top.
But just as evolution eventually moved beyond mechanical insects and created mesa-optimizers like humans, so gradient descent could, in theory, move beyond mechanical AIs like cat-dog classifiers and create some kind of mesa-optimizer AI. If that happened, we wouldn’t know; right now most AIs are black boxes to their programmers. We would just notice that a certain program seemed faster or more adaptable than usual (or didn’t - there’s no law saying optimizers have to work better than instinct-executors, they’re just a different mind-design).
Accessible only by the 'portal powers' of the Inhuman twins, Theo and Cerise, the Ant Hill is a safe haven for those who have escaped AIM's black site prisons. Dr. Hank Pym is slowly expanding the base with the help of ants he has learned to communicate with.
Shephard's most critical piece of equipment is the PCV. It is a black vest worn over the military fatigues. It gives the user protection from certain environmental hazards, as well as contains an onboard medical computer that reacts to changes in the user's condition. A HUD provides medical and weaponry information, while the primary component of the PCV is an electrically hardened reactive armor. Bearing many similarities and the compatibility with HEV suit chargers imply that the PCV is basically a stripped-down military version of the HEV suit. It isn't unique to Shephard: all members of HECU are equipped with one, which explains their unusual toughness against firearms in Half-Life and Blue Shift.
Three hundred million years ago, a meteorite struck the single large landmass on the third planet of a small yellow star, striking the earth inside a deep river valley. The meteorite was composed of a strange, dense black substance, not entirely in phase with the universe containing it. In another world, a stone of this type was called a moonstone.
Over time, the wise men and shamans of the Kotl learned to manipulate the energies of the black stone which lay in the valley they called. They designed machines to draw power from it and constructed a vast underground city, with automatons to perform menial tasks. They had no idea of the price that might be charged for their actions...
As power was drawn by the Kotl machines from out of the black stone, it became unstable. The otherworldly energies, capable of warping space and time to create gateways, were slowly released without focus, spreading over the entire valley. Inside the field of energies, time accelerated, sending the region hurtling faster into the future, creating a time capsule, a relic of a time millions of years before. And failing to recognize the significance of their actions, the Kotl continued to draw power from the stone.
Finally the energies drawn by the Kotl reached the limits that the stone could supply. Made lazy by reliance on their machines, the Kotl decided there were not enough automatons to provide the service they desired. To rectify this lack, their scientists used the energies of the stone to mutate and breed a species of giant ants, intending to utilize their industrious nature as servants. However their plans went awry, as the ants, which they had named the Myrmidex, retained the ants warlike disposition, and fled the city, taking with them the black stone which provided the city's power. While the generators could draw power from the stone from a great distance, the Myrmidex now blocked any further access to the stone.
Time passed, until small fragments of a strange substance were discovered in a Central American archaeological dig. A geologist named Johann Spector examined them, and accidentally triggered a Moongate, transporting himself and one of his assistants into the Valley. Spector, by using the small fragments of the black stone, was able to enter the Kotl city, and study the mechanisms therein. Unbeknownst to him however, the radiation was affecting his mind. Soon Spector was a megalomaniac, intent upon his plans to conquer the world, using the Myrmidex as his army. He had discovered a means of rendering himself and whoever else he chose invulnerable, concentrating energy from the city into a force field about him.
The tampering of Spector caused greater instability in the black stone. The shifting energies attracted attention from several unexpected sources. The entity Xorinia, always desirous of obtaining new information, sent Wisp units to observe the apparently imminent destruction of a world by the energies of the black stone. And the King of a distant reality, foreseeing the danger to the world of his birth, sent a warning to his land's greatest champion, the Avatar.
The Locater: The Locater was a device used to align the power generators of the city upon the black stone from which they drew their power. Even after the stone was stolen by the Myrmidex, this machine allowed the exact direction of the stone to be calculated.
The pad marked with a black square is no longer functional. It originally led to the Old Pindiro village. The unmarked squares are ordinary tiles. Note that there are two Myrmidex holes close to the teleporter plaza, so attacks are likely.
Artifacts dating from the original inhabitants are common within the city. The first to be encountered are likely to be automaton guards, and will be hostile towards any intruders. There are also weapons used during the fall of the city, and the main generators, which still draw power from the black stone in the Myrmidex Caves.
And Aedan offered the fort to Berach; that is Eperpuill, a monastery of Berach's in Alba. And the king offered to Berach and to his convent after him his own royal suit, and that of every king after him, and dues from all Alba. And the youths offered their own service to Berach, and that of their offspring and seed till doom, and their districts and territories. And Aedan said that it was Aedh, son of Brenann, king of Tethba, and Aedh Dubh (the black), son of Fergna, king of Breifne who should decide between them in Erin.
Meanwhile the oxen went through the desert to Eared Lara (the Mare's Ploughed field), and to Edargabail, and to Rath Ferchon (Fort of the Dog), and to Cluain in Buic Finn (Meadow of the White Buck), to Caill na nGlasán and to Lis Dúnabhra, and to Fan na mBachall (Slope of the Staves), and to Clar Lis mic Ciarain (Plain of the Fort of the Son of Ciaran) in Magh Ái, to Cluain Ingrec(h), and to Cluain Cái, and to Léna Ghlúin Áin, and into the mountain, and to Dubhcaill (the black wood), and to Rinn Daire Abréni, and into Tuaim Achad (Mound of the Field), and back into Rathonn, and they completed their day('s journey) before night. And their plough gear was on them and the iron (ploughshare) behind them all the time. And they ploughed in all these places, and every place in which they ploughed belongs to Berach. And from the spectre (scath) which appeared to the oxen on that day, (the place) Scathoch in Rathonn is named.
Another day when they were on the sea, the devil came to them in an enchanted, greisenhaft Thurneysen. most horrible, impure, and hellish form, and settled on the mast of the ship in the presence of Brendan alone. No one else of them saw him, but only Brendan. Brendan asked the devil why he had come from hell before his proper time, that is before the time of the great resurrection. It is for this I am come indeed, said the devil, to be tortured in the deep prisons of this black dark sea. Brendan asked him: What and where is that hellish place? Alas! said the devil, no one can see it, and survive.
Then the devil showed the door of hell to Brendan, and then Brendan saw the hard dark prison, full of stench, full of flame, full of filth, full of camps of poisonous devils, full of weeping, war and weeping Eg. 1. and shrieking and woe, of wretched cries and loud lamentations, of mourning and wringing of hands by the sinful people, and the life of grief and sorrow in the heart of pain, in fiery prisons, in currents of ever-blazing, streams, in the cup of lasting sorrow and of never-ending unceasing death, in dark sloughs, in seats of fierce flame, in abounding grief and death, and tortures, and chains, and heavy helpless struggles, amid the horrible screams of the poisonous demons, in the night ever dark, ever cold, ever fetid, ever foul, ever melancholy, ever rough, ever long, ever stifling, fatal, destructive, gloomy, bristling with fire, of the lower freezing hideous hell; on slopes of ever-fiery hills, without rest or stay, but hosts of demons haling the sinners into prisonsnarrow, add. After Brendan had seen these torments, he heard a lamentation great, intolerable, unendurable, and a melancholy wretched cry, and a helpless weeping in the depth of the bottom of hell. Then a great fear seized the cleric at the horror of that misery. And then Brendan saw a huge rock, and on it was thatthwe great misery which Eg. 1; F. which he had heard. And the infernal sea would wash over the huge rock on every side; a wave of black-red fire (would break) over it from in front, and a cold icy wave from behind alternately. 781b155fdc
